Sweetheart Square- Alternate Border

Here is an alternate border style for the Sweetheart Square pattern and also new instructions on how to join multiple squares together! 

You will need to complete Rounds 1-16 of the Sweetheart Square to make the alternate border.

Finished Size for 1 square- 6 1/2”
Pattern is written using U.S. Terminology.

Materials Needed
size 10 crochet thread
1.75 mm hook
yarn needle
scissors
Stitch Abbreviations
ch(s)- chains
dc- double crochet
hdc- half double crochet
sc- single crochet
sc-BLO- single crochet back loop only
st(s)- stitch(es)
yo- yarn over

Special Stitch
picot- ch 2, slip st in second ch from hook.

Round 17
Join color 2 in the third ch of any corner ch-3 space, ch 1, sc in same ch, sc-BLO in each of next 45 sts,

Repeat from ♥ to ♥ around
♥ sc-BLO in first ch of next corner ch-3 space, ch 3, sc-BLO in last ch of same ch-3 space, 
sc-BLO in each of next 45 sts ♥

sc-BLO in first ch of same ch-3 space as first sc, ch 1, hdc in first sc to make last ch-3 space.
(188 sc, 4 ch-3 spaces)
Round 18
ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in same space, ch 1, skip next 3 sc, 
[3 dc in next sc, ch 1, skip next 3 sc] 11 times,

Repeat from ♥ to ♥ around
♥ in next corner ch-3 space work- [3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc], ch 1, skip next 3 sc,

3 dc in same corner ch-3 space as first dc, ch 1, hdc in third ch of first dc to make last ch-3 space.
(156 dc, 48 ch-1 spaces, 4 ch-3 spaces)

Square 1
ch 1, 2 sc in same space, sc in next dc, ch 2, skip next dc, sc in next dc, 
[sc in next ch-1 space, sc in next dc, ch 2, skip next dc, sc in next dc] 12 times,


Repeat from ♥ to ♥ around
♥ in the next corner ch-3 space work- [2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc], sc in next dc, ch 2, skip next dc, sc in next dc, [sc in next ch-1 space, sc in next dc, ch 2, skip next dc, sc in next dc] 12 times ♥

2 sc in same ch-3 space as first sc, ch 2, slip st to first sc, fasten off and weave in ends.
Note- If making just 1 square skip the instructions for Square 2 and Square 3 and continue with 
Round 20.

ch 1, 2 sc in same space in same space, sc in next dc, ch 2, skip next dc, sc in next dc,

Place the working square over the previous square so the wrong sides are together and the right sides are facing out, slip st into the corresponding corner ch-2 space of previous square, ch 1, 
2 sc in the same corner ch-3 space of working square, sc in next dc, ch 1, 
slip st into the next corresponding ch-2 space of previous square, ch 1, skip next dc of working square, sc in next dc, 
[sc in next ch-1 space, sc in next dc, ch 1, 
slip st into next corresponding ch-2 space of previous square, ch 1, skip next dc of working square, 
sc in next dc] 12 times,

2 sc in next corner ch-3 space, ch 1, slip st into the corresponding corner ch-2 space of previous square, ch 1, 2 sc in the same corner ch-3 space of working square,

ch 1, 2 sc in same space in same space, sc in next dc, ch 2, skip next dc, sc in next dc, 
[sc in next ch-1 space, sc in next dc, ch 2, skip next dc, sc in next dc] 12 times, 
2 sc in next corner ch-3 space, ch 1,

Place the working square over the previous square so the wrong sides are together and the right sides are facing out, slip st into the corresponding corner ch-2 space of previous square, ch 1,

in the slip st that joins the working square and the next square together work- [dc, picot] 3 times, 
dc in the first ch-2 space of the next square, ch 1 ✦,

✱ If the same ch-2 space as last dc made is a corner- in same ch-2 space work- [picot, dc] 5 times, 
ch 1 ✱,

(28 sc, 144 dc, 116 picots, 56 ch-1 spaces)
